A man accused of human trafficking in Tennessee has been arrested in northern Arizona. A US expedition has launched an investigation into a mysterious underwater object discovered via satellite imagery in 2020, though aerial photographs show it was visible as far back as 1938. Staff and members of the public then escorted him from the store, after which he repeatedly struck the entrance door before leaving the area. A 48-year-old man from Abingdon has been arrested on suspicion of public order offences and released on bail while enquiries continue.

A dead puppy, believed to be a lurcher aged about two to three months, was found dumped in a carrier bag in a field near Warndon Hub off Shap Drive in Worcester on Saturday morning. Dog walkers discovered the bag by bushes near a primary school when one of their own dogs began sniffing it. The puppy was wrapped in a bed sheet. The RSPCA is investigating the incident, and West Mercia Police has been informed.

Homicide detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department searched the Joshua Tree area on Friday for evidence connected to the disappearance of Christina Downer, 38, sister of Saturday Night Live writer Jimmy Fowlie. Downer vanished from the Koreatown neighbourhood of Los Angeles in late November 2025, with a missing-person report filed in December. In April, her brother announced on Instagram that police had informed the family she was dead and the case had become a homicide investigation. Reginald 'RJ' Harrell, 17, was fatally stabbed by a 16-year-old co-worker at a McDonald's on Louetta Road in Cypress, Texas, on Wednesday night around 11:30 p.m. Harrell was working on what was supposed to be his day off. He was found in the restaurant's restroom with multiple stab wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. The 16-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with murder, held at Harris County Juvenile Detention Center. Harrell was a senior at Cypress Creek High School who planned to become a welder.

A statue of Nelson Mandela has been unveiled in Glasgow city centre, standing on a plinth of South African granite on Nelson Mandela Place. Glasgow was the first city in the world to award Mandela the freedom of the city in 1981 while he was still imprisoned on Robben Island, ahead of his release in 1990 and his election as South African President in 1994. The Omani co-pilot of Flydubai flight FZ1073 planned to crash the aircraft into the passenger terminal at Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport in a suicide attack inspired by the 9/11 attacks, according to the UAE attorney general. The 29-year-old, identified as Hamam al-Hammami, attacked the Indian captain Smit Machchhar with an emergency axe on 30 September while the plane carried 174 passengers, mostly Israeli, from Dubai to Tel Aviv. Passengers and crew overpowered him and the aircraft made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia. Investigators found al-Hammami had used two previous flights to familiarise himself with the route and airport, and had begun showing signs of extremism while studying in Australia in 2017, where he read extremist literature and online content glorifying terrorist organisations. He admitted acting alone and had prepared physically by taking boxing lessons and psychologically by consuming material promoting terrorism. Flydubai later suspended flights to and from Israel until further notice.

Liam Knight, 22, of Worcester, has avoided immediate jail time after conviction for sustained sexual communication with a girl under 13 between October 2022 and February 2023. Knight met the girl at church and initiated explicit messaging on social media, with the communication involving exchange of intimate photos and videos. Despite warnings from the victim's family, school and police, Knight continued contact until his arrest in February 2023.

Students and staff at Menominee Indian High School in Wisconsin were evacuated Friday following a reported bomb threat. Mike Ditka, the legendary Chicago Bears coach and player, has died at 86, his family announced on Friday. As a player, he spent six seasons with the Bears before playing for the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys, with whom he won a Super Bowl in 1972. Ryanair has announced a new twice-weekly route from Norwich Airport to Malaga, operating on Mondays and Thursdays from summer 2027. The government has approved a major three-year plan to reform support for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in Hampshire. Called The Future of SEND in Hampshire, the scheme aims to deliver earlier and more joined-up support across education, health and social care, with system-wide changes to be fully embedded by 2029. The plan was developed by the SEND Local Area Partnership, which includes Hampshire County Council, NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight, parent and carer forums, education settings and voluntary organisations. Organisers Tobiasz Kozlowski and Neil Jones were convicted of murder and sentenced to life with minimum terms of 33 and 34 years respectively. Kevin Wooden and Kye Arthur, who carried out the kidnapping, were convicted of manslaughter and jailed for 23 and 22 years. Samel's killing was retaliation by an organised crime group after HM Revenue & Customs seized £1m worth of illegal cigarettes from his unit in Aston in February 2019.

The Orionid meteor shower will peak over Essex on October 21, visible from midnight until dawn. The shower is made from debris shed by Halley's Comet and could produce up to 15 meteors an hour at its peak. The meteors are famed for travelling at around 41 miles per second as they enter the atmosphere, creating fast streaks and glowing trails. The shower is active from October 2 to November 7.

Hallowscream, an award-winning haunted house attraction at York Maze in York, opens tonight. The event runs over 17 nights in October with up to 2,000 visitors expected nightly. It features five themed haunted houses plus a new sixth attraction, Corntagion, a zombie-themed cornfield ride, along with live shows and scare actors.

The Orionid meteor shower will peak in the skies above Suffolk on the night of Wednesday, October 21, between midnight and dawn. The meteors originate from Halley's Comet and can be viewed with the naked eye at a rate of around 15 an hour.

Jeremy Clarkson is returning to the format that made him famous on Top Gear and The Grand Tour with a new stand-alone Prime Video episode. In 'Jeremy Grows A Car: A Clarkson's Farm Special', the 66-year-old will attempt to build a Jaguar F-Type V6S using produce from his Diddly Squat Farm in Oxfordshire, with a focus on style, luxury and performance. York's Winter Lights are being installed across the city centre ahead of their official switch-on on Thursday, November 12. West Oxfordshire District Council has been ranked the UK's second lowest-rated council on Google, averaging 1.17 stars out of five, after a wave of negative reviews linked to Jeremy Clarkson. The council rejected the TV presenter's proposals for a restaurant at his Diddly Squat Farm. The spike in one-star ratings coincided with the release of Clarkson's Farm series, with 80 new reviews appearing by the end of March 2023 and a further 20 following the third series in May 2024.

North Yorkshire Council has named 23 defendants in High Court proceedings over an unauthorised traveller site near Hillam, west of Selby, alleging breaches of a court order. Work began on the land on 11 September when heavy machinery and lorries arrived carrying building materials, followed by at least 14 caravans. The council served a temporary stop notice on 14 September and secured an interim High Court injunction on 19 September. The authority has warned that anyone found to have breached the injunction could face contempt of court proceedings.

Lidl submitted plans to build a discount store off Aylesbury Road in Thame to South Oxfordshire District Council in November. The proposal has support from over 2,700 local people, but the council has not yet approved or refused it. Five Oxfordshire drivers have pleaded guilty to drink-driving offences. Nathaniel Robinson, 42, drove on Bunkers Hill in Shipton-on-Cherwell with 64 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath on 13 July and was fined £300 with 10 licence points. John Wilkinson, 79, drove a Mercedes on Ickford Road in Thame with 57 micrograms on 18 July and received a £1,874 fine and 12-month driving ban. Anthony Horwood, 26, drove a Land Rover Discovery on the A417 Faringdon Road with 46 micrograms on 8 July whilst uninsured and was fined £240 with a 12-month ban reducible to three months. Thomas Draisey, 20, drove a Honda Civic on Oxford Road with 89 micrograms on 17 July and was fined £424.

Michael Bowen has been jailed for life with a minimum term of 16 years after being convicted of murdering his 65-year-old mother Janet at their home in Maple Gardens, Yateley, Hampshire in the early hours of New Year's Eve last year. Bowen struck his mother, who had recently suffered a stroke and was bed-bound, more than 10 times to the head and face with a hammer. Judge Adam Feest KC described the attack as 'ferocious and sustained', saying it was 'impossible to imagine the terror' the victim experienced. The jury rejected a defence of diminished responsibility despite evidence that Bowen suffered from substance-induced psychotic disorder and heard voices telling him to kill his mother.

Olivia Osborne, 37, of Rutland Crescent in Trowbridge, has been charged with theft from TG Jones (formerly WH Smith) on Fore Street in Trowbridge town centre, as well as possession of Class A and B drugs, driving without a valid licence and driving without insurance. The charges follow a Wiltshire Police investigation into a theft reported on 6 October. She has been released on bail and is due to appear before Salisbury Magistrates' Court on 4 January 2027.

Julia Loktev has released 'My Undesirable Friends: Part II — Exile', a nearly six-hour documentary following Russian journalists who fled Russia after its invasion of Ukraine. The film, opening in select theatres this weekend, is the second half of a five-year project that began in autumn 2021 when Loktev was filming independent journalists in Moscow as Vladimir Putin declared some reporters 'foreign agents'. Consultants for California's high-speed rail authority have billed taxpayers for late-night rideshare trips to and from CEO Ian Choudri's home in Folsom, according to expense records reviewed by CBS California. Denver attorney Brent Butzin and KPMG managing director Thierry Prate submitted about a dozen Lyft rides each to or from the residential address, with some pickups after 1 a.m. Another dozen rides went to nearby Folsom restaurants and bars. The New York Post reports the expenses were vaguely described as 'related to work with Ian', and one email shows Butzin argued Choudri had requested his presence when questioned by a rail authority staffer. More homeless tents have appeared across Norwich just days after rough sleepers were removed from a busy city centre roundabout. Samantha Natalie Phythian, 35, from Rhyl, was found dead in a burning van in Prestatyn, north Wales, after emergency services were called to Gas Works Lane at around 11.30pm on Sunday. A post-mortem examination revealed she was pregnant at the time of her death. Thomas Bell, 38, from Rhyl, has been charged with her murder and was remanded in custody after appearing at Mold Crown Court. A court heard that Ms Phythian was believed to be alive when the fire was started, though the defendant's case is that he did not start it. A 47-year-old man has also been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit arson and possession with intent to supply drugs. The case was adjourned to January for a plea and trial preparation hearing, with a potential trial date scheduled for three weeks in April next year.

American Airlines Flight 37 diverted from Madrid to Dallas to New York's JFK airport on 6 October after six of the aircraft's eight lavatories stopped working, leaving only two operational during the transatlantic flight. Finance industry leaders including UK Finance, TheCityUK and the CBI have written to Chancellor John Healey warning that raising taxes on banks in the forthcoming Budget could drive businesses and capital out of the UK. Scarborough's Alpamare waterpark is being sold to an undisclosed buyer, with North Yorkshire Council planning to lease the adjoining 20-space car park on Burniston Road for a peppercorn rent over 99 years to support the site's operation. The new owner intends to carry out improvement works before reopening in early 2027. The waterpark, which opened in 2016, was taken into possession by the council after its developer Benchmark Leisure Ltd went into administration in October 2023, forcing the council to write off most of a £9m loan. President Trump has established a committee to investigate allegations that Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook made false statements relating to mortgage instruments, in a renewed attempt to remove her from the central bank's board. The move comes after the Supreme Court blocked Trump's effort to fire Cook in June. Trump first attempted to remove her in August 2025, citing mortgage fraud allegations. Cook has denied wrongdoing and her attorneys say the White House is 'cherrypicking' facts and any claims are based on clerical errors. The committee, comprising three Trump appointees including economic adviser Kevin Hassett, will hold a closed hearing at the White House on 5 November to consider evidence. Cook may present a written statement and attend the hearing with her attorney. The committee will report to Trump on whether there is 'cause' for her removal.

Jasmine Dessaure, 37, a US Air Force servicewoman based at RAF Mildenhall, was sentenced to 12 months in custody suspended for two years after pleading guilty to two counts of causing death by careless driving. She lost control of her Jeep Cherokee on a single-carriageway road in Brandon, Suffolk, on 15 April 2023, colliding head-on with a Nissan Note carrying Dilipan Sebastiampillai, 43, and his wife Dorota, 41, both of whom died. Mansfield District Council is introducing a scheme to address the high number of empty shops on its high street. Three men have appeared in court in Cumbria accused of sexual assault and other violent offences. Carl Wilkinson, 46, of Dalton Road, Barrow, pleaded not guilty to two charges of intentionally strangling a woman on August 20 and October 6. James Chivrall, 34, of Argyle Street, Barrow, is due to enter a plea to a charge of sexual assault at the same court on Monday.

The Federal Reserve reported Friday that American families are struggling to meet debt payments at levels unseen since the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis. The share of families behind on loan payments jumped to nearly 20% at the end of 2025, up from 12% in the prior survey, whilst those behind by two months or more rose to over 8% from 5% in 2022. This deterioration comes despite wealth disparities narrowing somewhat and inflation-adjusted average net worth increasing 7% to $1.24 million.

Mikhail Zvinchuk, founder of the popular Russian military blog Rybar and a former Russian defence ministry official, has been arrested in Montenegro along with his wife and three other Russians. The arrest follows warnings of attempts to destabilise the country. A Federal Reserve survey released Friday found that families headed by someone aged 75 or older are now America's wealthiest age group, boosted by stock market gains. The youngest families saw their wealth decline over the past three years. The median net worth of the richest one-tenth of American families rose 31 per cent to $3.6 million between 2022 and 2025.

Bradford Council's deputy leader says the authority is committed to finding a 'positive and sustainable resolution' for Dalton Mills, a derelict mill complex in Keighley that has been repeatedly hit by arsonists in recent years. A major fire in September forced nearby residents to temporarily leave their homes and was the third blaze at the site this year. The Grade II*-listed Victorian building was used as a filming location for Peaky Blinders and Downton Abbey.

Arizona State University hockey played its home opener on Friday with sophomore Matthew Mayich still on life support in hospital following a collapse during an outdoor workout on 20 August. According to the family's attorney, Mayich is unlikely to fully recover.
