Jeffries vows accountability and affordability after Democrat midterm sweep
House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries has declared the midterm results a 'great American comeback' and vowed to hold those in power accountable.
Hakeem Jeffries, the top Democrat in the House of Representatives, has celebrated his party's sweeping midterm victory and formally declared his candidacy for Speaker. He called the results an 'American tsunami' and said Democrats expect to win at least 255 House seats, giving them a historic majority. Jeffries pledged to focus on affordability and bringing accountability to corruption, though he said Democrats should prioritise delivering results rather than seeking retribution against the Trump administration. His comments drew criticism from progressive activists, with nearly 400,000 signing a petition opposing his speakership bid.
